Gay tested positive for steroids
American sprinter Tyson Gay tested
positive for a banned "anabolic agent" that carries a two-year ban if an
athlete is found guilty of using it.
According to a report by the BBC, Gay was sent a letter by the United States Anti Doping Agency (USADA) which outlines the nature of the sample he gave testers during the US World Championship trials in June.
"Using the Carbon Isotope Ratio Analysis it reported that the sample had an adverse analytical finding reflecting values that are consistent with the administration of a steroid of exogenous [external] nature," the July 23-dated letter stated.
The letter adds that the positive test was for an "anabolic agent" which carries a two-year ban under the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) code if an athlete is found guilty of using it.
The carbon isotope test us normally used to detect banned steroid testosterone or one of its precursors, like androstenedione or androstenolone.
So far, USADA has refused to comment whether Gay tested positive for a steroid, although they did confirmed that the 2007 world champion failed atleast two tests - one at the US Championships and another at an out-of-competition test in May.
While the investigation into his case is ongoing, Gay has been suspended provisionally by USADA, although the agency has praised him for revealing his positive tests publically.
"I don't have a sabotage story," he said last month.
"I basically put my trust in someone and was let down. I know exactly what went on, but I can't discuss it right now."
